About Stephen

After obtaining a 1st Class Hons degree and PhD in organic chemistry (Corpus Christi College, Cambridge; under the supervision of Prof Ian Paterson),  I left the UK and moved to the University of Texas as a postdoctoral research fellow (working with Prof Phil Magnus).  I then spent many years working as a medicinal chemist in UK pharmaceutical/biotech companies (Xenova, Argenta Discovery and Summit PLC).

I then developed a series of chemical sensors during my time at City University London.  After this return to academia, I taught as a fellow at St Hilda's College, Oxford University and worked in dementia research at the Alzheimer's Research UK Oxford Drug Discovery Institute (2015-2018).  I was then appointed as a lecturer in organic and medicinal chemistry at Kingston University London (2018) and was promoted to senior lecturer in 2020.

My group's current research interests centre on the development of new synthetic  methodologies, biologically active molecules and bio/chemical sensors.  Outside of the scientific community I enjoy supporting Arsenal as well as running in and around my local area.  I also have a strong connection with the arts community as a published poet.
